The most aggressively right-wing person I know personally (and of significant notoriety in public as well), was also the best-prepared and most aggressive proponent of lockdown, doing mask drives etc, at the very beginning of this from November 2019.
But then seemingly everybody in any position of official authority globally seemed to align to a set of massively duplicitous and contradictory positions. And now what would you expect he thinks? Nobody fights harder than one who feels they’ve been duped.
Masks and lockdowns and vaccination are not the issue here. The issue is that COVID-19 is being used as a weapon to achieve all sorts of unrelated social agenda, and that makes everything suspect. Everything actually related to disease prevention could have happened with zero resistance if officials just stuck to the original script and focused on that one problem.
Another point: it doesn’t take a lot of skepticism to see how this can be a rational viewpoint. On one hand, if we’re shifting focus to unrelated agenda, then it’s not a crisis. On the other, if you needed a crisis to enable the agenda, then it’s an abusive agenda. What I’ve seen from the silent majority is that they mostly believe the maximally-pessimistic view, which is that we are dealing with both a real crisis and an abusive agenda. This viewpoint is ignored entirely by the media because it’s so ordinary, rational, and non-polar. The other consistent viewpoint is that the crisis is intentionally overblown because the agenda is abusive. That, by my observation, is probably the second most popular viewpoint, with most adherents actually in agreement with the agenda. Like, for example, it’s important to lock down your house, but not bad enough to lock down the border, and it’s the perfect time to focus on defining gender categories for women’s sports.
- hilbert42 5y agoIt's worth watching this story about the Spanish Flu that's just been posted on HN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=d0AoRkmj9YM https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=d0AoRkmj9YM As I posted there, there are some uncanny parallels between what happened in 1918-1920 and now—a number of which you mention. I also note there's an image at 15:16 of three people wearing masks one of whom is also wearing a big sign which says "WEAR A MASK OR GO TO JAIL". It seems rather apt these days.
