Charles Barkley: ‘The only people who are not vaccinated are just a–holes’

- HarryHirsch 5y agoHow about the arseholes that want people back in offices or at school? Having to lecture in a lecture hall that seats 250 students is just asking to catch COVID, and while the current vaccine will keep you out of hospital you may still get a rough case of the disease. We need a change in behaviour and in architecture. But unless there's a wave of dead schoolchildren this fall, nothing will change.
- jfengel 5y agoThere probably won't be a large wave of dead schoolchildren. But there might be a wave of dead teachers, for exactly the reason you mention. Probably not a large wave, since there's only 1 teacher per ~20-30 students. We've got ~4 million teachers. Most are vaccinated. So only about 1 in 100,000 would die, so perhaps 40 deaths. Not all are vaccinated. Maybe 100 teachers will die all told. Children rarely die of COVID. It happens, but not often. We're often reminded that it mostly kills those with some kind of predisposition -- age, illness, weight, etc. Which describes a lot of teachers, because teachers are adults, and often older adults. Maybe 100 teacher deaths will change people's minds, especially after other teachers start noticing and pointing it out. Or maybe not. Lots of people seem to think it's a fine tradeoff, though usually not the same people taking the risk. They'll definitely notice if teachers start refusing to take the risk.
- Sindisil 5y agoEh, I agree that those who could get vaccinated, but don't are indeed assholes. Worth remembering, though, that there are groups of people who cannot get vaccinated yet, either because it hasn't been proven safe and effective yet (kids 0-11), or because, for specific reasons, it isn't safe for them to get the vaccine (those severely allergic to components of the vaccines, some immuno-comprimized people).
