My lab in grad school built a - for us - quite expensive submersible robot. At one point we managed to set the embedded computer box on fire. My advisor physically restrained us from grabbing the fire extinguisher, and made us let the fire burn out. It was simpler to process the PRs for new computer hardware than the paperwork for a fire extinguisher deployment.
