I think a key difference is the level of access. Sending a letter once a month, seems like a reasonable connection to have with someone who lives many miles away. However in today's hyper connected world, you have Facebook, Instagram, E-Mail, Phone Calls, etc. People who you might enjoy some connection with, are able to connect with you a whole lot more.
