Nowadays, people don't really care as long as they can have their Latte Machiato and have a holiday in the Mediterranean twice a year.
- eurasiantiger 5y agoNL is different because production is still criminalized. All Amsterdam coffee shops are selling criminally produced cannabis. I’m reasonably convinced that integrating organized crime into a community brings with it a lot more apathy than regular consumption of cannabis
- pmoriarty 5y agoWell, from what I've heard not that many Dutch people use cannabis -- most cannabis use in NL has historically been by drug tourists. On the other hand, NL has been exceptionally tolerant and liberal in almost all ways except for its anti-muslim xenophobia... so maybe cannabis use has had a mellowing effect?
- mustafa_pasi 5y agoThe Dutch whose motto is, "just be normal"? Not a very complacent people?
- the-dude 5y agoI have edited my comment, sorry about that.
- xtiansimon 5y agoI’m American, and first heard this phrase at an event sponsored by the Dutch consulate general at SF MoMA maybe 20 years ago. I heard the version, makt das normal (Sorry if I didn’t conjugate ‘make’ properly). It was described to me as the go-to or default when you don’t know what to do. Translates to ‘do normal’. (Like Young MC’s ‘Bust a move’, haha). That seemed like good advice from a country with permissive drug policies. When things get crazy, do normal. I think of this when I see youth with full face piercings or whole body tattoos working normal retail jobs. Like they went crazy, and then did normal. Of course that’s just my imagination, but life is like that sometimes (whether you wear the scars on the inside or on the outside). When I look up the phrase today, web results show the imperative, ‘be normal’.
- the-dude 5y agoThe canonical saying is 'Just act normal, that is already crazy enough' ( don't stand out )
- xtiansimon 5y agoWhat is the expression in Dutch?
- the-dude 5y agoDoe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg
