Like the Youtube author, I have traveled the world extensively. I'm also a long-time resident of Houston (suburbs). What he says is correct. We weren't bombed. We did this to ourselves.
Having said that, I've also ridden a bicycle through downtown and about a hundred miles outside of the city. The chief way to accomplish this safely, is to do so in a group ride of at least 8 riders. I've probably done about 10,000 miles of this, mostly recreational riding, in the last 10 years.
I'm unusual, in that I had a 3 mile commute through a wooded area, that was surprisingly amenable to cycling. Accordingly, I did ride my bike to work about 5% of the time.
Even though I had shaded suburban bicycle/pedestrian trails to use, Houston is damn hot, humid, and for my size (> 200 lbs.) the cycling really only worked in the 6 cooler months of the year.
