Walmart will cover 100% of college tuition for its workers
- troydavis 5y agoThis started in 2018, though paying for books is new this year: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17188762 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17188762 I think the real news is that, 3 years later, only 28,000 employees participate. In HN terms, it doesn’t have product-market fit. If you were Walmart (or one of the schools trying to enroll Walmart employees), how would you market or change this program? One idea: incorporate a list of approachable open-enrollment classes into the standard new hire forms. If someone takes one class on a whim, that might lead to taking more. Imagine an “Enroll me in:” question that lists 20-30 accredited online classes as checkboxes - no other application or enrollment required. These could include some fun classes, like drawing or graphic design/desktop publishing, so new hires wouldn't need to approach it as a degree.

- HarryHirsch 5y agoThe dirty secret is that a lot of students work at Walmart to support themselves through their degree at a local university or community college. Walmart doesn't pay for that, but they do pay for a number of really shady online degrees. SNHU is a straight-up degree mill. Let's file this program under Public Relations.
