If we wait for autonomy on the sleeping level, thousands will die due to drunk and distracted drivers. It's a much better plan to roll out partial autonomy to aid in accident reduction ASAP. Falling asleep in the car sounds like a vacationer's privilege, not a preventer of thousands of road deaths yearly.
- brailsafe 5y agoYou know what would prevent thousands of road deaths annually? Not needing cars for basic tasks like getting groceries or going to school.
- zwirbl 5y agoMicrosleep is a reality. But until we get full self driving, drunk and/or distracted drivers will still be drunk and/or distracted and will not be able to react if the car chooses wrong. And from the Tesla Self-driving vids I've seen that happens more often than expected
- alkonaut 5y agoNo. I’d much rather meet drivers with a higher risk of crashing into me than autonomous cars with a slightly lower risk. Me (and I assume a large part of the public) will not accept FSD cars on roads with merely “human level” as the bar. Perhaps when the improvement is an order of magnitude.
