I've had the opposite experience - Proton has been getting better and better - even more so if you like to play around with the Glorious Eggroll fork. Then again, I mostly play single player games that don't have anti-cheat. Once Valve gets anticheat working though, which they are actively working on, it's basically game over.

Unfortunately my favorite game right now, Vermintide 2, uses Easy Anti Cheat which does not work with Proton. I've had to set up a VM with pass-through to play it.
