Good we are all in agreement then... Windows and linux are both at the very least in the "just works" territory. But we also all agree linux is inferior because you caveat-ed your point with: "provided these peripherals are not using or dependent on extremely new protocols or standards." Windows does not generally have this issue.
Linux is, by your own logic, Inferior from a usability or "just works" standpoint. We all agree on this, therefore: End of discussion on this baseline.
Where we disagree is the extent of this incompatibility. Linux IMO is even worse then the baseline above. On linux, my graphics card (arguably a peripheral) has melted down and crashed the OS on me many times. I have a lot of trouble getting my xbox controller to connect with bluetooth to the OS. So anecdotally I would say that even your base line of linux just being inferior is too high.
That's not the end of the story because these small issues extend way past peripherals. You can keep the argument focused on peripherals if you want but this is really a general issue affecting linux and FOSS.
- rglullis 5y agoFirst, you are arguing a point that I never made and that I honestly don't give a fuck about. The discussion was never about "what OS is better", but "Linux Desktop is mature enough to the point that people can use it as a daily driver without issues when joining a conference call". What ticked me off was "rar rar, Linux users always have trouble at work". I want to fight this idea because it spreads a false prejudice and that could be used for misinformed people to justify things like "So Linux doesn't work for group calls? This means that everyone must run Windows/MacOS for work". Second: "Linux is inferior (to Windows or MacOS) on the usability standpoint" much like "Democracy is inferior (to autocratic dictatorships or communist-style central planning) on the speed of decision-making process." In the face of a larger principle that clears out all but one OS, insisting over arguing about one dimension is pointless, stupid and/or dishonest. If all the alternatives you consider to be better (on your peculiar definition of usability) are closed, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR DEFINITION OF USABILITY. You can go ahead and keep building strawmen all you want, but to me this just sounds like you are trying way too hard to rationalize your preference for proprietary/closed systems. We are only going to have a serious problem if you ever try to impose your choice on me.
