- bArray 5y ago> I look forward to Westminster taking climate change more seriously now… Despite talk of the environment in the recent G7 meeting, I suspect it's going to take a backseat to economic recovery. You have the ongoing issues from Brexit and the fact that the government (and their opposition) have an impossible standard for COVID vaccine success. Also I'd be interested to hear what you want to see Westminster do. I've heard a lot of ideas being thrown around, but I remain sceptical.
- binbag 5y agoI don’t know the solution, but I’m not currently in charge of a G7 member state.
- bArray 5y ago> I don’t know the solution, but I’m not currently in charge of a G7 member state. Fair enough. I would urge against asking for change simply because you find a problem - the proposed solution may end up being worse in the long run. There are multiple examples of this in the global warming context. For example, every government used to ship their recycling rubbish all the way around the world to places like China, who would then just sit on it or fill up their own landfills. Another example is a biodegradable plastic bag that ended up hindering the composting process more than the original plastic. Another example is a CFC reduction program, where reducing the amount of certain chemicals would earn 'green points' that could be negated from carbon emissions - governments just started purposely creating these dangerous chemicals and destroying them in order to earn points to offset against their emissions.
- atc 5y agoHow do we know these weather patterns are the product of climate change?
- illwrks 5y agoHaven't they all fecked off down to Cornwall until September...
- toyg 5y agoYou'll keep looking for a while... Treasury coffers are empty after a year of covid subsidies, borrowing is out of control, and tax intakes will be meager for a while. They'll simply continue pushing on the electric-car-switch plan - since it costs nothing.
- tonyedgecombe 5y agoEven if the green party got in it wouldn't make much difference because they have all been pedaling the lie that we don't need to change our lifestyles.
- whywhywhywhy 5y agoOr maybe just don't do massive development projects on historical floodplains. https://www.queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk/~/media/lldc/localplanfloodriskreviewreport1.pdf https://www.queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk/~/media/lldc/loc... Bad talking points harm the climate change arguments. The damage to the movement of exaggerating during the Inconvenient Truth era will never be repaired because the movement was so focused in trying to make people panic and act that we're now past the deadlines they were feigning panic about and these deadlines now become ammunition for the other side.
