Because it's a socialised health system in a population of 25 million, half of taxpayers pay no net tax.
If you get sick, you're treated 'for free', yes it's great, but there's no market prices or competition to drive innovation.
It's all paid for with state royalties from coal and iron ore (currently A$220/tonne) and national debt (currently on it's way to $2 trillion by 2024)
When the socialist party sweeps the next state and federal elections they've promised to shut down coal mining. ($90 billion in royalties gone)
When the Chinese Communist Party gets its iron ore mines in their African colonies up and running we'll go back to $40/tonne.
emdawg should stop watching the ABC.

It was a world leader in research, there is still medical research being performed though under funded. The assertion that market prices drive innovation in health is interesting though a counter example is the US health system which is the most expensive in the world. There is no proof that competition enhances health outcomes.
