I have a home NAS, accessible through a Wireguard network set up on the router. Am I self-hosting Synology's things (for photos / music / video / downloads)?
Synology also supports Docker, so I have
- Gitea
- Vaultwarden
- Nextcloud
- pihole
- Miniflux (+ rssbridge)
running there. These I would definitely say I self-host.
I'm also happier with these choices (with the exception of Nextcloud, which I'm replacing with Syncthing) than I would be with any commercial / cloud replacement.
Storing passwords outside your control just is not sane. RSS readers on the web suck and want money to read a well-established file format from a public source. Gitea is really nice for things I don't want on GitHub or public, but want to be able to look up on the go (my Org notes, dotfiles, any short-term miniprojects, &c). Synology's apps are used for high-volume stuff, which would combine into quite a large regular bill if done "in the cloud".
