From what I gather from folks who worked in the first Echo Dot, it was a tire fire of a project rushed out the door. Apparently the remnants of the failed Fire Phone team decided to Android-ify the Echo software, which was Kindle-based originally. I've always found the quality of the Dots to be subpar compared to the original Pringles can. Not surprised to discover this fuck up.
