The Dig is one adventure game where these "unfair" puzzles make sense. As an explorer on an alien world, encountering and deciphering alien technology, isn't it completely expected that you have to do some trial and error to understand things. I don't remember the robot puzzle to be too demanding. The alien skeleton was a challenge though. Agreed that the ending could have been a bit better, but overall the atmosphere and experience of the whole game from the shuttle and asteroid to the alien world were superb. I would love to see a remake of this in the vein of the Monkey Island remakes, perhaps with some tweaks to the ending if that didn't detract from the original.
