I've given away things i cherished to a family member. Be it a scooter, or a couch. The new owners just didn't have the same respect for the items and they deteriotated rather quickly. I think the trick is to not make it free. Maybe sell it, well below market price but just enough to where they'll care. Easy come easy go.
