This is too much of a pivot to actually take place. Metaverse products have existed for a long time (Second Life) and are already popular (Fortnite) while FB's customer base is considerably older and interested in different things than running around w/ an avatar or building buildings. If the FB crowd wanted that stuff, they would be on another metaverse platform already.
Does Zuck think his brand has so much traction that he can pull all those (existing) FB people into something that they didn't ask for and haven't sought out? Je doute.
- JohnFen 5y agoIt sounds like they're trying hard to find something, anything, to monetize Oculus with that isn't either extremely niche or games.
- mimixco 5y agoVR has been the "next hot thing" since 1995. People were showing all kinds of alternative interfaces back then and you see where that got us. VR makes people physically ill and doesn't add anything to the experience of using software w/o VR. Every major VR product is a flop from Google Daydream and Cardboard to Oculus and MagicLeap and even DisneyQuest. I don't see that changing anytime soon.
- JohnFen 5y agoI agree. I don't think that VR will have a strong presence outside of games and niche applications, either.
