I studied a "hype" field a few years back (Machine Learning and its application to Brain-Computer Interfaces), and can't help but disagree with you. The AI hype didn't lead to documented falsification or better questions, but a mountain of bullshit literature that was designed to get grants and satisfy the "publish or perish" imperative.
