I tried to do something similar in Android and it worked pretty well. I launched Musicolet, played a relaxation track, and adjusted Audio Focus to Level 1 in the settings. Then I launched a film in VLC. I was able to use the EQ in Musicolet to control the volume of the backing track while watching/listening to the film.
(I'm not sure what the full repercussions of Audio Focus 1 are; there were a couple of dramatic red warning sentences about the way it brutally ignores other apps' requests to hog the audio, but so far that seems like a nice feature)
