Clickbait. Tesla GPU != Gaming graphics card.
It's a bit tiring to see things like this in a pseudointellectual kind of way. I looked through the article to see what specific processor they used, and couldn't find one. I'm going to guess a V100 or an A100 due to fp64 capabilities. Which, while they have CUDA cores (and especially here -- tensor cores), aren't all that useful for playing games. In fact, I don't think you actually can render or play games on an A100/V100. Just try it! They did have a cool demo with realtime raytracing on a DGX-1 for some shiny stormtrooper Star Wars short a few years back at CVPR. But that's an entirely different thing than an interactive game render, the pipelining is just very, very different I think.
I'd argue too that you'd want anything over HMB2 for your memory if you're doing anything about a reactor. Slapping a non-computing-center GPU onto a likely hilariously expensive reactor and calling it a day seems like either a grad student's choice, or a clickbait title. It could be the former (or something else, I don't want to fall into the illusion of choice here), but I'd lean towards the latter.
Thanks!
- tbalsam 5y agoFound the reference in the article. It's a simple P40, so no, not a gaming GPU. This means the article title is not only clickbait, it's a blatant lie. Though that is an impressively lightweight GPU for what I'd feel like they'd need for that type of realtime control reaction. But that's far outside of my wheelhouse so I should probably lean back to avoid falling into the same pit I'm accusing the article of doing.
- giuliomagnifico 5y agoIts true, it’s not a gaming GPU but you can run games on it, as far as I now, it still have cuda cores.
- shawnz 5y agoDoesn't the P40 use the same chip as in the 1080 Ti? While the card may not strictly be a gaming GPU, it seems to be roughly equivalent in power to gaming GPUs from several generations ago.
- beebeepka 5y agoI can see what you're saying but in reality we gamers paid for some of the coolest things we have today. Graphics cards and 3d engines don't exist because of games but we did pay for a lot of that progress.
- teawrecks 5y agoI had a professor that said the biggest driving forces of our industry are video games and porn.
- ThePadawan 5y agoI had a similar experience, but my prof put the defense industry in there as well.
- dogma1138 5y agoYou can definitely play games on a V100 Titan, there is no A100 yet with a graphics output but if you have another card even onboard graphics on your CPU you can definitely “game” on the machine by using the A100 for rendering and another GPU for video output.
