There is a whole lot of joking dismissal of systemic racism going on in these comments. Are you making the point you intended?

- l33t2328 5y agoThey’re not dismissing systemic racism, they’re mocking some radical proposed “solutions”.

- commandlinefan 5y agoWell, just for the record, I'm dismissing it too - "systemic" racism is completely imaginary.
- hackerrrnews 5y agoDefinitely! It's completely imaginary to those it doesn't affect.
- l33t2328 5y agoWhy do you say that?
- commandlinefan 5y agoWell, for one, it's not actually defined - and this is deliberate, because if one were try to define it in any meaningful way it could immediately be proven to be incorrect. For the most part, its proponents point to (somewhat arbitrary) statistics, but ignore counter-statistics (like incarceration rates of men vs. women, for example) that undermine their position.
- l33t2328 5y agoYou would say average income, education level, incarceration rate, etc. are arbitrary? Is there any statistic where black people in America are performing better than any other race?
- skinkestek 5y agoI think you are honest so I'll give you my best explanation: Many people here, including many black I think are utterly fed up with nonsense. I am someone who badgered my boss to get him to give a job to the foreign cleaning lady who had the necessary degree (he did give her a job). My Indian colleague came to thank me a few years later for helping them settle in. And I'd probably step in in a fight to save someone. But this stupid stuff that has been going on for the last few years? I guess it causes even more grief for everyone.
- hackerrrnews 5y agoIf you think they're being honest, why not give an honest response too? > I am someone who badgered my boss to get him to give a job to the foreign cleaning lady who had the necessary degree (he did give her a job). My Indian colleague came to thank me a few years later for helping them settle in. What's the relevance of this self-congratulatory bit? Is this a way to say "I'm not racist so trust my opinion" ? > But this stupid stuff that has been going on for the last few years? I guess it causes even more grief for everyone. Got it. So you think jokes about systemic racism and affirmative action are an appropriate response to a technology failure? Do you think this article has anything to do with the so called "culture wars" that you seem to be bemoaning?
- alexilliamson 5y agoJokes are generally downvoted on HN, except of course when they come from illuminated edge-lords or the anti-woke! Hilarious, you see?
