Would be fascinating to hear his take on it seeing as how he also tried to run a database startup. Nobody outside knows what Datomic's profitability actually looked like, but the fact it was aquihired by a banking startup suggests to me Datomic's financial position was less than compelling.
- iLemming 5y ago"Acquired by a banking startup"? just fyi: Nubank is the largest financial technology bank in Latin America. It's not "some startup".
- blacktriangle 5y agoMan time flies. I remember seeing Nubank employees on the conference circuit back when they really were a startup. They were one of the huge early success stories of Clojure. No disrespect ment to Nubank at all, but the point still stands. I'm pretty sure that Datomic was acquired not for their financials, but to secure the future of the technology that such a now-massive company was built on. In a way I feel like Nubank buying Datomic only validates skeptisim of closed-source database companies, that Nubank felt having their database be a closed source product by a company with an uncertain future was an unacceptable risk. Most startups are not going to have the level of success Nubank did and therefor will not have the same options to mitigate the risk of betting on a closed source db.
