Is it really that complex compared to an operating system like Unix though? I mean there's nothing simple about Unix. To me the question is, is it solving a problem that people have in a reasonably simple way? And it seems like it definitely does. I think the hate comes from people using it where it's not appropriate, but then, just don't use it in the wrong place, like anything of this nature.
And honestly its complexity is way overblown. There's like 10 important concepts and most of what you do is run "kubectl apply -f somefile.yaml". I mean, services are DNS entries, deployments are a collection of pods, pods are a self contained server. None of these things are hard?
- cjalmeida 5y agoWhat’s complex about *nix? All you need to understand are device files, POSIX permissions and ACLs, cgroups, tcp/udp sockets, nginx/haproxy, thread/process scheduling, (virtual) memory, PAM, dbus, syslog, pipes, unix sockets, 30 filesystem options, nfs, userspace vs. kernel space, sysvinit or 10 flavors of systemd files, iptables/ufw, networkmanager, ssh, selinux, chroot, flatpack, snaps, rpm, deb, ansible/chef/puppet. Oh deploying on the cloud? Cloudformation/AzureRM as well. Pretty easy. No damn complex k8s needed.
- nikau 5y agoThe irony in your comment is tools like networkmanager, snaps, systemd are kubernetes like and severely disliked by experienced unix admins due to the needless complexity and usability of them.
