I like Grady Booch's explanation from the Twitter thread: Rational Software was this: founded in 1982, acquired by IBM in 2003 (they outbid Microsoft, who were also interested in acquiring us). They were a number of dev tool companies in that time, but no more: open source makes the economics of this a tough sell these days.
