Fun! It's beside the point of the article, but am I misinterpreting "There are 2 valid solutions" or is it at least 2 valid solutions? The first two solutions I came up with weren't the same as the author's but passed the checker (e.g. 7534+0825=08359)
- mzl 5y agoNormally, solutions that start with zeroes are prohibited in alphametic puzzles.
- jonsen 5y agoRight: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbal_arithmetic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbal_arithmetic
- petercooper 5y agoYes, but one of his two valid suggestions also starts with zeroes (specifically, 2817+0368=03185).
- sunir 5y agoI didn’t check his algorithm but if it only found one solution with a leading zero it is incorrect. 3821+0468=04289 as well.
- SoylentOrange 5y agoI am OP and there are actually 25 solutions, with only one of them having all leading digits as non-zero. I made a mistake in the article, where I meant to write "there are at least 2 solutions and here is one example". I will fix this. Nice catch.
- petercooper 5y agoAha! I only found a few with my naive approach, but always good to check that I haven't lost all my marbles yet :-) Good post, look forward to more.
