- ognarb 5y agoYeah ftp support should be backed in the operating system. In KDE, it's simple to open an ftp link in Dolphin as if it was a local folder and I think it's the same for GNOME, but I have no idea about if it's possible in macOS and windows.
- pitaj 5y agoFTP support works in Windows explorer.
- calvinmorrison 5y agoLast I checked FTP was part of the web?
- lallysingh 5y agoNope, literally not. It's an internet service, sure, but not the web.
- calvinmorrison 5y agoThe World Wide Web (WWW), commonly known as the Web, is an information system where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs, such as https://example.com/ https://example.com/), which may be interlinked by hyperlinks, and are accessible over the Internet.
- mattl 5y agoThe web is HTML and HTTP. URLs to HTTP resources are links to things on the web, URLs to non-web resources are links to things on the Internet, maybe... maybe not, maybe links to other computers in your home, or files on disk.
- mattl 5y agoNope, FTP predates the web. A web page may link to an FTP server, of course.
- sschueller 5y agoWell I'm going to move all my documents and files that are available for download to a public ftp. If you use Firefox you won't have access, sorry.
- daxuak 5y agoCheck out NCBI, terabytes of public data are being shared on FTP servers. There are other protocols/APIs, but FTP has been a much better experience in many use cases. Those files are also linked all over the place in NCBI pages and elsewhere.
- acdha 5y agoDoes FTP really have better experience in 2021? I'm pretty sure the last time I saw better performance from FTP was in the previous century and, unlike FTP, having built-in error detection and recovery is pretty nice.
- daxuak 5y agoIn my experience with NCBI it's better mostly because other tools or schemes provided by them kinda sucked, but FTP servers were there since forever and grew to be well organized and stable. Outside of this niche, no.
