This is a fascinating, well-written, and collaborative take on an edgy and evolving subject. I'll give the TL;DR only to get you to read the whole thing: IP content has always been remixed forcibly by audiences and NFTs allow further modularization and monetization of that IP, creating a remix economy.
That dry summary leaves out the wonderful nuanced history these writers put in, so please do give them their due. But here's my concern. They're exactly right. IP holders will have to use future NFT platforms in order to monetize (forget control) their IP because it's going to appear on those platforms anyway. This is orthogonal to the way in which IP holders (from Loréal to the USPS) have been forced to embrace Instagram and TikTok -- or see their IP bandied about in public without any voice from the creator.
If this is the case, only big IP holders and big platforms will benefit from "remixing of Web2," as the OP cleverly puts it. The next TikTok and the next NBA TopShot(s) will win big and the little guys, the artists and the consumers, will be enslaved in another platform thing-y they just "consume" and don't control. So, decentralized centralization, here we come!
This reminds me of the HN post a few days ago in which the Doge coin creator now believes that crypto's endgame is further control from our blessed overlords. Ugh.
