  In the US the government is constitutionally bound to provide just compensation for anything they appropriate for public use. I doubt the Chinese government is likewise bound.

    Ther is a constitutional requirement to do so in China. The difference is that the vast majority of land isn't owned in China but leased by the Central government, so the compensation for the land itself may be very low. Structures built upon it are generally compensated properly, though there surely is sometimes corruption. Rural land is even less compensated, sometimes you may be assigned new land and compensated for the structure only.

    In my experience, it's actually pretty common for folks to get massive compensation for land in China. There's even a term (拆二代) that describes a whole generation that suddenly became rich after their parents' land was appropriated by the government.
