All my opinions that will probably be downvoted: Like any cryptocurrency, Filecoin is an attempt to undercut an existing market and the regulation around it. IPFS could, and probably should, be paid for in much the same way current hosting works, just the host isn't tied to the namespace or file name so you can pay for redundant hosting. The IPFS protocol is intrinsically useful, Filecoin is a vaporware scam being snuck in behind it to extract rent.
