The Motorola 88K probably should be on the list too. The instruction set was good but the implementation sucked. The 88K was abandoned pretty quickly and replaced by the PowerPC ISA.

- PaulHoule 5y agoI'd almost want to put the 68k on that list. It was successful for a while but never performed as well in real life as it was supposed to on paper. (Compare that to the 6502 which punched above it's weight -- not long after the mac came out people made a decent GUI for the C-64. Had Steve Wozniak not crashed his plane, Apple might have brought out the ][gs more quickly and extended the 6502 to 32-bits) Every company that depended on the 68k ultimately went out of business or had a near-death experience and transitioned to a RISC architecture.
