Interesting concept - and maybe it would work for some - but I find it completely intuitive that if I want to switch tabs (whether it be new url or a tab or where I keep my bookmarks) they are all pretty much in the same space.
There are also plenty of physical notebooks that have those tabs on the top. I believe the reason they are popular on the sides is that on an 8.5 x 11 is more space on the side than the top. For a computer screen, that is not the case.

On a computer screen you absolutely have more space on the side unless you're using a vertical screen or 3+ windows side by side. Software UI is far too inflexible. Imho every program should have at least something like Firefox' customization mode where I can move, add and delete buttons on the interface. Though sadly even there I can't move the tab bar to the side.
