Nearly All the Chinook Salmon in the Sacramento River Will Die
- pvaldes 5y agoIt seems that people is finally understanding that we have a biodiversity crises coming for our natural resources.
- ipnon 5y ago"Canada, the most affluent of countries, operates on a depletion economy which leaves destruction in its wake. Your people are driven by a terrible sense of deficiency. When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money." https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Alanis_Obomsawin https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Alanis_Obomsawin
- Proven 5y agoIf a forest was purchased at market price, it doesn't make sense to "cut the last tree" because that completely ruins the investment. Likewise for catching all the fish - compared to the capitalist who properly manages their river, you'd make less money and ultimately go out of business. Resource depletion happens in socialism, state capitalism, fascism. Not so much even in feudalism. So, privatize everything.
- bloniac 5y agoIt’s the nature of humanity. Frankly the sooner we wipe ourselves out, the better it will be for whatever other species remain.
- postalrat 5y agoLife on Earth won't last forever. Humans will probably be the only opportunity to bring life off this planet before the Sun goes nova or some other planet destroying event happens.
- sul_tasto 5y agoIn all honesty, what are we supposed to do? We are the problem… Often when I go into stores these days, I don’t think about what I would enjoy buying, or what I need to buy. I think about how every non-perishable item in the store will soon end up in a landfill somewhere. Then I think about all the other stores up and down the street full of stuff, and I wonder how we can have any chance of living sustainably. It’s overwhelming. We haven’t even identified the systems we need to transition to, to solve this existential crisis. And we aren’t having serious discussions about what to do either.
- Goety 5y agoNature is what it is. Either we control it or a lot of us die. Dying is also a solution to this problem, possibly ending in extinction. Combating climate change will not be fair and it will be hard to swallow with no guarantees of a happy ending. We should not be having this "should we be doing something or nah?" attitude. We really have nothing to lose but the lives of our children.
- ipnon 5y agoYou are on the right side of the solution. The problem isn't people such as yourself, or people who do not believe in climate change, the problem is the people in the middle who do not care one way or another. They will not be convinced until their groceries are expensive and pick up trucks need $6 per gallon. The feedback is already starting. We will never see a "naive" planet Earth again, but already the environmental trouble we are causing is being slowly turned into political willpower and economic pain. There's still hope yet.
