Solo founder here. Not sure how to build a proper distributed backend without docker compose. My stack is python, celery, postgresql, redis. I have one remote vm (each for staging and prod) and a simple deployment script that ssh into the remote vm and does a ‘docker compose up’. But yeah kubernetes is a big time sink with no value and I chose to avoid it.
- meowface 5y agoI've also found that docker-compose provides the ideal level of abstraction for most solo founders / small teams / early stage companies and projects. Unless you're already extremely experienced with Kubernetes, or are in the very rare scenario where you truly have no choice but to rapidly, massively scale very early on, I'd say it's probably typically a mistake to start a brand new project with Kubernetes instead of something lighter like docker-compose. (The only other reason, I suppose, would be if you just intrinsically really want to learn it and don't have growth as your primary goal at that time. Just be sure to fully understand the opportunity cost.)
