Tesla wants customers to pay a $199 monthly fee for 'Full Self-Driving'
- notjustanymike 5y agoThat's one way to pay for the inevitable wrongful death lawsuits
- batch12 5y ago> In addition to the subscription package, Tesla's FSD is also available for purchase for the price of $10,000. Looks like it is an alternative to paying the flat 10k? I don't understand the outragey tone of the article.
- plebianRube 5y agoLet's say you bougt in 2018, the website very clearly stated that FSD would be available by the end of that year, and that the car already contained all of the hardware necessary for FSD. FSD has been about to be available by the end of the year, every year since then, but that is beside the point. If that person today decides they want an FSD subscription, they now need to pay an additional 1500 since the computer originally installed and advertised as FSD capable, is infact not capable of FSD. However, if they want to pay 10k outright, no subscription, for FSD, then the upgrade of that computer, again, that was originally advertised as being able to do FSD, but actually couldn't, is free.

- carlivar 5y agoWaymo has full self driving. Tesla isn't close and at this point doesn't seem likely to ever get there. It's rather distressing that such blatant false advertising is allowed to exist. Elon is the nightmare Product Manager out of sync with engineering. His 2016 promise of coast to coast summon: https://mobile.twitter.com/elonmusk/status/789022017311735808 https://mobile.twitter.com/elonmusk/status/78902201731173580... Another quote: "Tesla will have over 1 million robotaxis on the road next year" -Elon Musk, 22 Apr 2019 I get Elon is optimistic and tries to push his team but it went over the line a while ago in my opinion. Many laypeople are still being duped by this stuff.
- zitterbewegung 5y agoTitle is misleading it should say : Tesla offers customers who didn't buy FSD at purchase to unlock it for $199 a month. Thats around $2400 a year so you would exceed the current price of FSD at around 4 years or so. It is better than locking it out perpetually but still feels strange car manufacturers are allowed to do this.
- bassman9000 5y agoYou buy a PC (one off payment), and they buy yearly-licensed software for it. This is not different.
- jgalt212 5y agoyou can lease a Camry (the entire car) for $199 / month.
