Spiders are the only thing that bother me, despite knowing how beneficial they are to ecosystems. Also the fact that people love crab and crabs are just giant fucking hardened sea spiders is funny.
How do you manage to not get spooked by spiders?
- motiejus 5y agoI braced myself and carried a small spider to my 3yo kid and showed it to him. I was extremely uncomfortable, but he didn't notice. Same with a frog (though I was comfortable). From that time he is playing with and carrying spiders, frogs and various insects, small and large, without thinking about it. I guess it's about early experiences.
- madaxe_again 5y agoExposure. Same as with anything, really. I used to be squeamish about them, but these days I can have a dozen of the guys running around on me after walking through a cobweb, and I instead just marvel at these tiny and bizarre creatures to whom I am equally giant and bizarre. I think there are some VR experiences specifically intended to help with arachnophobia through exposure - I can’t speak to their efficacy, but I can speak to the efficacy of exposure in general to overcome a fear. I guess it also helps that there are precious few venomous spiders around here, and those that there are won’t do you any more damage than a bee sting, and only then if you mortally threaten them.
