At least 75% of the people I know with masters degrees didn't pay a thing and in fact got free tuition AND a stipend. I have a lot of relatives from India that came to the US to get their masters in various engineering disciplines. None of them paid a dime. They had to work a lot of weekends for professors doing research but it was just 2 years and then they had published research papers and industry connections to get a job.
