I'm a huge fan of Space Exploration and I think a huge part of why this was so forgettable is just how badly Virgin Galactic promoted and coordinated everything. For one thing, it was never clear when the launch was supposed to happen. All I really knew was that his flight was going to take off before Bezos'. Additionally, the stream was a joke (assuming I would even know what time to tune in for it) because people want to see the flight, not Stephen Colbert talk about how wonderful it is. The mission didn't seem to have a name, or a patch, either, compounding the problem of getting info about it.
And lastly, SpaceShipTwo just isn't an inspiring vehicle anymore. It barely reaches the US boundary of space and the machine is just so limited compared to what SpaceX and even Blue Origin bring to the table. It's still an engineering feat worth praise, but it's just not that cool. If this was 2007 it would be incredible.
