I am not old enough to know what car buying was like 20 years ago but the market in many way seems fine the way it goes now. I could not buy a near but I bought a used car that was 3 years old and had 40k miles on it. I wouldn't call that "very old". It was really nice and fresh feeling imo and I'll probably drive it until 150k before selling it for another previously leased car.
