Automated facial recognition systems have an extremely bad record when they are presented with faces that have been underrepresented in their training sets. Classifying a black person as a Gorilla is a very serious error. Assuming that all black persons are the same is also a very serious error.

- Tabular-Iceberg 5y agoThe parent is talking about the track record of facial recognition in general, not this one in particular. There’s a viral screenshot of a photo classifying app supposedly classifying black people as gorillas. It makes me wonder if there would be a similar outrage if a white person would be classified as a proboscis monkey. We all look like monkeys if you squint, it goes with the territory of having a pretty recent common ancestor.
