Black teen barred from skating rink by inaccurate facial recognition
- Tabular-Iceberg 5y agoIt’s unfortunate, but wouldn’t racial profiling against blacks imply that they were over-represented in the training dataset and therefore would have better recognition performance compared to other races? If one presupposes blacks are more likely to cause trouble and need to be excluded from the premises, wouldn’t that be the logical course of action?
- NotSwift 5y agoAutomated facial recognition systems have an extremely bad record when they are presented with faces that have been underrepresented in their training sets. Classifying a black person as a Gorilla is a very serious error. Assuming that all black persons are the same is also a very serious error.
- ostenning 5y agoThere’s no mention in the article about AIs confusing people with animals. Where did you get that information? I’d be careful with your assumptions
- Tabular-Iceberg 5y agoThe parent is talking about the track record of facial recognition in general, not this one in particular. There’s a viral screenshot of a photo classifying app supposedly classifying black people as gorillas. It makes me wonder if there would be a similar outrage if a white person would be classified as a proboscis monkey. We all look like monkeys if you squint, it goes with the territory of having a pretty recent common ancestor.
- dabinat 5y agoIs it actually necessary for a skating rink to use facial recognition? It seems like a big invasion of privacy in order to detect what is probably an extremely small number of bad actors.
