TBH, I have many side projects and open source contributions. In fact I quit my job to work full-time on it. Was I a good hire? I don't think so. I was literally working 2 shifts and I always gave more importance to my own projects. Most of my colleagues had no side projects/open source contributions, but they were clearly outperforming me at work.
