Facebook execs not happy own data showed it perpetuates right-wing echo chamber
- suifbwish 5y agoTheir algorithm will create an echo chamber for every single person on their network. Why particularly do they care about creating “right-wing” echo chambers unless they themselves are biased in one way or another politically. Personally I find it disturbing and a bit dystopian that mega corporations get involved in politics at all and even worse, are EXPECTED to do so.
- gnu8 5y agoIf they're not happy about it then why did they do that?
- bradknowles 5y agoThey’re not happy they were SHOWN to be an echo chamber amplification. So, they made the authors take it out, then they could re-bury their heads in the sand and keep making all that sweet money from amplifying the echo chamber so well.
- Rebelgecko 5y agoPresumably it was an unintended side effect of their algorithm
- suifbwish 5y agoWhat I am gathering here is that they are not happy their algorithm appears to be politically impartial. Math equations and Computer algorithms don’t care about whatever BS propaganda is most popular unless they utilize ML models that become somehow trained only on that data. One of the reasons I love computers is they are pure of all emotion and bias. Code is code. It is whatever you make it to be. People have been saying facial recognition is biased but that’s only because the data being fed into the training models is unbalanced, aside from underdeveloped color/geometry analysis and extraction libraries. The point is code does not care about politics. If it appears to it’s because the code authors do not truly understand either what they created or the type of data they are feeding into the system.
- redis_mlc 5y agoIt's weird reading the article. Ben Shapiro is a Liberal centrist, same with Hannity. Fox today is as right-wing as CNN was in 2000 - namely, Liberal. Fox even has a Democrat/Leftist on most panel discussions, which I find irritating because of the blatant Marxism, not because of their party affiliation.
- trident5000 5y agoIt perpetuates all eco chambers.
- anonymouswacker 5y agoNot all echo chambers are equal
- trident5000 5y agoSounds like something someone who's in an eco chamber would say.
- suifbwish 5y agoYou are absolutely right. Every echo chamber has equal rights to believe it is better than the others.
