Ask HN: How do you find an old post that has been hidden?
This morning there was an excellent article from The Atlantic about China's Uyghur treatment through the eyes of a family that escaped to the United States. However, now due to downvoting, flagging, or other hiding, it's no longer on the front page or the next three pages. It had been a front page article. How can I find this submission that is no longer showing up? NOTE: I am not looking for the article (which is called One By One, My Friends Were Sent to the Camps). I am looking for the submission and comment section.
- psim1 5y agoOK, I was able to find it through a Google site: search. Is there a more direct (on-site) way?
- mindcrime 5y agoThe search bar at the bottom of the page? Also, HN has a neat ability to jump straight to a list of submissions by domain. Do something like: https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=theatlantic.com https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=theatlantic.com and if it's a recent entry, you can probably find it with a quick skim through the results.
- psim1 5y agoI like that domain search; thanks for the tip.
- ThatGeoGuy 5y agoUsually the best bet is to use something like https://hn.algolia.com https://hn.algolia.com and search that way if you're looking for an actual HN post. Otherwise Google does wonders here.
- psim1 5y agoAfter working the search terms a bit I was able to get hn.algolia.com to bring it up, but Google ends up being more efficient about it.

- wk_end 5y agoIt'd be great if someone (@dang?) could provide some kind of explanation for why that (in my opinion) excellent and worthwhile article disappeared so quickly from the front page. I'm having a hard time finding a charitable reason why a human would intentionally hide it, and if it was an automod issue, the automodding should probably be tweaked.
