After a long time dabbling with nix packages on OSX, never quite understanding what the heck I was doing syntax wise, I finally "got it" after watching these _excellent_ tutorials [1] by @burke. I still have no idea what CLI commands to use for anything, but I never need to understand that since I only use Home Manager and work directly in derivations.
The revelation that _everything_ is an attribute set was the key I think, along with understanding syntactic quirks like the multiline string ('') and attribute set merge (//). The latter is especially disorienting if you aren't familiar with it. With that small foundation you can easily dig through the source code for nix packages and craft whatever you need, or at least I so far have been able to. I am now fully on a nix packages / Home Manager setup except for various homebrew casks I haven't ported. That isn't fully necessary, but it would be nice to have everything in one place (although I _do_ manage my homebrew Brewfile by way of Home Manager).
