Ask HN: Help me find out what problems NFT creators and collectors have?
Hi HN,
I really into NFT and believe that it can be a perfect fit for mass adoption in the future. If you're an NFT creator or collector let's talk!
Just imagine people can collect NFT's to own a little piece of the internet while it belongs to all internet users. Having a piece of the internet that's fundamentally yours — something that you think is beautiful and unique and special — is not something we’ve been able to do until now. Or you can support your favorite artist, brand, or community by collecting their NFT's.
Right now I see several problems:
1. It is hard to create, sell or buy an NFT because of the poor UX of crypto billings. You need to set up your wallet, buy some crypto, spent it on gas and etc. This problem is similar for both creators and NFT collectors. I see it's as a bottleneck for mass adoption. Maybe it is needed to create a simple payment system that connects your credit card with crypto so you can buy NFT just like you buy any other stuff on Amazon. Something like Stripe for NFT.
2. There's a lot of competition between creators on popular marketplaces. Most talented creators need to promote themselves and learn how to sell, while they want just to create a new type of art.
3. There's no place to show your NFT collection. When in the offline world we can go to galleries or museums, online we only have marketplaces like OpenSea and Rarible.
If you're an NFT creator, collector or just interested in it let's talk to find out what we can do with that!
- verdverm 5y agoHN is probably not a good place to ask this, as we largely see NFT as a scam. You might use search at the bottom to read through the comments on past stories related to crypto and NFTs. HN is pretty bored with crypto related topics at this point, and glad the hype cycle is in decline again.
- marleonid 5y agoYeah, I totally understand why people don't like crypto. I don't like it for the same reasons. I just trying to find something valuable that I could miss behind this scam. And NFT looks like for me as something that can be not just a regular hype. Maybe it can bring some value to people. And if it can, I'd like to help it. Thank you for your feedback anyway!
- verdverm 5y agoNFTs are worse than typical crypto, selling the illusion of ownership for real world goods or artificial collector items. There could be something related to company ownership, but who wants to run their business on a public ledger
- marleonid 5y agoYeah, legally you own nothing buying NFT. NFT is just a record in blockchain that some digital stuff is in the exact link. And if the host server goes down, this digital stuff will be lost. But from another point of view buying NFT you get an everlasting record telling that some piece of digital good (art, collectibles, etc.) belongs to you. I can understand the motivation of collectors that buy NFT not for speculating purposes but for an opportunity to have mathematical proof that some piece of the internet belongs to them. What if we see NFT like that? Maybe I see it wrong, what do you think?
- verdverm 5y agoDo you think the person that bought the NFT of Jack Dorsey's first tweet owns it or has any control over it? If I buy an NFT for a jpeg, does that prevent anyone else from viewing it or making copies of it? Does an NFT really represent ownership? What really defines ownership?
- marleonid 5y agoI guess we need to determine ownership first. Most people are determined ownership in legal terms, yes. But legal terms are invented by people as an NFT. The answer to your first 2 questions is no. Those are reasonable questions — NFT doesn't allow full control over the content in it. Why do people buy NFT? Except for buy-sell purposes, what do you think? I'm looking for NFT collectors and creators btw to speak with them about it. And if you're interested, I can share their answers with you later.
- guilhas 5y agoThere are several other blockchains already for at least 5y to try prove work authorship or creative idea "first". That could possibly help authors with monetization, or copyright issues. And they are not called NFTs
- al2o3cr 5y agoMaybe it is needed to create a simple payment system that connects your credit card with crypto so you can buy NFT just like you buy any other stuff on Amazon. Good luck drowning in fraud and chargebacks. You'd either need to do so much KYC that nobody would want to use the service, or you'd basically be building a Money-Laundering-as-a-Service platform.
- marleonid 5y agoOh, I didn't look at that this way. Thanks for noticing. I saw how Bitski made their payments and it's quite similar to what I described. They don't have any KYC yet though and it seems to be okay with their business. Why do you think it would be a real mess with frauds?
