Any time this argument is discussed, I state my point of view, and get downvoted to hell. But let's do it again.
Prefacing that I live in a country that has a very long maternal and somewhat average paternal care, and a very good welfare state:
I am well against parental leave being paid out with public money, which also mean by my taxes. The reasons are that I don't care about other people's kids; it is unfair to those who don't have children; it's a game very well exploitable, and exploited, I see it around a lot; it forces a whole lot of additional work to the employer and oftentimes to other employees.
- vmception 5y agoYou would be okay with it being paid for by the private sector and having the same result? Or, you think not having public money involved would also fix the result? Not clear what the public money part has to do with your observations
- cool_dude85 5y ago>The reasons are that I don't care about other people's kids Isn't this kind of one of government's fundamental roles? I don't care about the road 2000 miles away from me in front of some random guy's house. He doesn't care about the road in front of my house. Neither of us will ever drive on the other's road. And both roads get built.
- thefz 5y agoWell I have a say on how public money is spent, and my idea is that public money for personal lifestyle choices is wrong.
- op00to 5y agoThis is a nonsense statement.
- handoflixue 5y agoDriving is a personal lifestyle choice, but you said you support roads (or at least "infrastructure"). I'm not sure how you can possibly support "education" if you don't support "having kids" in the first place - do you only mean college? And claiming that health care doesn't involve subsidizing dozens of bad personal choices is obviously absurd: why should your taxes pay for someone else's smoking habit, or choice to engage in a dangerous career like "cab driver"?
- thefz 5y ago> if you don't support "having kids" in the first place Let the parents pay for them, not me.
- joshuaissac 5y ago> Let the parents pay for them, not me. This can also be said about schools.
- clktmr 5y agoWell, what should be payed with public money in your opinion? Only things everyone cares about? Most people agree that children are a very important part of our society and future. If that isn't worth being supported by public money, I honestly don't know what else could be.
- thefz 5y ago> Well, what should be payed with public money in your opinion? Health care, education, police, infrastructure... > Most people agree that children are a very important part of our society and future. I'd say some. At the end of the line there will always be someone that will pop out some nonetheless, so why wait spend public money on it? Humanity is on an upward trend and is going to reproduce anyway. It has been like this for millennia, even before money existed.
- op00to 5y ago“Pop some out”.
- clktmr 5y agoYet I don't care about your health, education, safety.. Let's just agree that public money should be spent on public interests. Maternal leave is not to "pop out" more children, but to give them the care and upbringing they need. Having children is not a personal lifestyle choice, it's a basic human needs. Otherwise we won't exist.

- op00to 5y agoOther peoples kids will fund your old age. They will take care of you. They will run the world when you are too old to do so.
- thefz 5y agoAlready not happening here, the pension system is bust.
- medvezhenok 5y agoIt's not just the pension system. Stock market and all other investments are still a claim on future production that has to be run by someone (i.e. your kids or other people's kids). So if there are no children, you will have to work until you die (unless all work can be done by AI at some point in the future).
- tobr 5y agoI understand fully that you are a troll and that it is a losing battle to engage with you, but I hope you understand that you end up arguing that poor people should not have children, or alternately that children of poor parents deserve to be neglected. Even if you believe in the bizarre position that parental leave should not be supported by society because it is a lifestyle choice (lolwut), you can’t argue that the child has made a lifestyle choice by being born.
- thefz 5y agoThe answer to that is simply, if a child is going to put you in a difficult position or you can't afford it, maybe it's not the best idea to have one. And I told in the parent post that this ends up in a downvote bath anyway so downvote if you don't agree and move on.
- clktmr 5y agoMaybe it's not the best idea to expose yourself to any risks or live unhealthy, if you can't afford healthcare. /s
