I've learnt a lot of characters and words using flashcards in Anki. When you're reading books about Rust code, it's more passive than producing the sound that the character makes and then checking it and marking it right or wrong. Even native speakers should check what they type, and if they want to guarantee accuracy they should read aloud what they've typed to slow themselves down. It's not a handwriting-specific thing.
