Maybe I am misunderstanding but the difference between mini/micro and OLED is that mini/micro are an LCD with lots of backlights while OLED has every pixel self emitting.
Is micro not just a regular LCD with lots of backlights individually controllable rather than 1 big one. And mini being lots but not quite so many?
- naikrovek 5y agoMicro-LED and OLED is where each pixel is self-emitting. > Is micro not just a regular LCD with lots of backlights individually controllable rather than 1 big one. that's "Mini-LED". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroLED https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroLED
- ksec 5y agoMini-LED is actually backlight technology building on top ( or more precisely "under" ) the same LCD display panel. Micro LED isn't LCD at all. Its LED is the pixel ( or more precisely sub-pixel ) itself. The problem is as you can imagine, how to built 8M ( 4K Resolution ) pixel / MicroLED at mass scale, and more importantly at a cost that is somewhat competitive or palatable for consumers. Both Mini-LED and OLED have a very decent roadmap in quality and cost reduction over the next five years. And as much as I want MicroLED display, there is nothing that shows similar promise. We might end up with another case of good being the enemy of best.

Apple is sourcing such panels, mostly smaller and at nosebleed prices. But volume will make for a steep learning curve, as it has in the past.

They been researching GaN on glass continuously since 2008. They first got something resembling a decent emitter through a practical process back in 2011-2012. Imagine where they are now.
