Something like CalTopo or GaiaGPS will let you see a print version of Canada's national topographical maps for the area - for example Road River doesn't show up on any other map for me. It gives some clues on how you might get around the area, but I think you're right about the plane or hiking - the closest road is the Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway, which is completely on the wrong side of the Richardson Mountains from Road River/Peel River, so it would be difficult to access. Fun to think about for sure.
