So if you have N heat waves this decade while you had M<N heat waves 50 years ago in a decade then you can say that about N-M of these were causes by the climate change. But I'm pretty sure you know that. However, people seem to have demonstrated a lack of ability (or will) to understand the climate change based on the long term stats, so some think that maybe the individual events help these people understand (or accept) the reality.
